According to the suttas Vipassana is not a meditation technique, it is a fruit (phala) of the contemplative life. Vipassana means intuitive, revelatory, insight. There is no place in the Discourses of the Buddha (suttas), where the term Vipassana refers to a meditation technique. The Buddha called the practice of meditation Sati not Vipassana.

We can conclude that the attainment of jhana was a central theme to the Buddha. However, there are a lot of people claiming they know something about what the Buddha taught, but, unless they understand: jhana was the Buddha's definition for the eighth fold of his Noble Eightfold path, jhana was his very vehicle to insight and liberation, and his definition for enlightenment, then they do not understand the dhamma of the Buddha.
